What is the Round of 32?
The Round of 32 is an entirely new stage introduced at the FIFA World Cup 2026 — it has never existed before in World Cup history. With the tournament expanding from 32 to 48 teams, FIFA needed an extra knockout round to accommodate the larger field.
Here is how it works: the 48 teams play across 12 groups (A through L) with 4 teams per group. The top 2 teams from each group advance — that is 24 teams. Those 24 teams enter the Round of 32, where they are joined by the 8 best third-placed finishers from the 12 groups, making 32 teams total.

How the bracket works
Unlike the previous 32-team World Cup where each group winner faced another group's runner-up, the 2026 bracket is more complex due to 12 groups and 8 best third-place teams:
- The 12 group winners are seeded 1–12
- The 12 runners-up are seeded 13–24
- The 8 best third-place finishers are selected by comparing points, GD, GF, and Fair Play across all 12 groups
- Pre-set bracket pairings ensure geographic balance where possible
- Extra time + penalties apply if tied after 90 minutes in the Round of 32
Who determines the 8 best third-place teams?
All 12 third-placed teams are ranked against each other using the same criteria as group stage tiebreakers: points, then goal difference, then goals scored. The top 8 of those 12 third-place finishers advance. This means a third-placed team with 4 points could go through while one with 3 points stays home — making every group stage result count.
