How the FIFA World Cup 2026 Points System Works
The FIFA World Cup group stage uses a straightforward Win / Draw / Loss points system. Every team plays 3 matches (against the other 3 teams in their group). Points are awarded as follows:
3
Win
1
Draw
0
Loss
The top 2 teams from each group advance to the Round of 32. In the 2026 format, there are 12 groups (A through L) with 4 teams each, making 48 teams in total — the largest World Cup in history.
FIFA Tiebreaker Rules (in order)
When two or more teams are tied on points, the following criteria are used in this exact order to separate them:
- Points — Higher total points rank higher
- Goal difference — Goals scored minus goals conceded across all group matches
- Goals scored — Total goals scored in all group matches
- Head-to-head points — Points from matches between the tied teams only
- Head-to-head goal difference — Goal difference in matches between tied teams
- Head-to-head goals scored — Goals scored in matches between tied teams
- Drawing of lots — If still tied, FIFA draws lots

Frequently Asked Questions
How many teams qualify from each group in World Cup 2026?
▾
In the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the top 2 teams from each of the 12 groups advance to the Round of 32. With 48 teams across 12 groups, that means 24 teams advance directly. This is a change from the previous 32-team format where only 2 of 4 teams progressed — the new format still advances the top 2 from each group of 4.
What happens if two teams have the same points and goal difference?
▾
If two teams are tied on both points and overall goal difference, FIFA moves to the next tiebreaker: total goals scored in all group matches. If still tied, it goes to head-to-head results between those specific teams (points, then goal difference, then goals scored in the head-to-head match). If all of those are also equal, the tie is broken by drawing of lots — a random draw conducted by FIFA.
How many matches are in a World Cup 2026 group?
▾
Each group has 4 teams, and every team plays against each of the other 3 teams exactly once. This means there are 6 total matches per group (calculated as 4×3÷2 = 6). Each team plays 3 matches, and each match appears once in the table.
What is goal difference (GD) in the World Cup?
▾
Goal difference is calculated by subtracting the total goals a team has conceded (goals against, GA) from the total goals they have scored (goals for, GF) across all group stage matches. A positive GD means the team has scored more than they've conceded. For example, if a team scored 5 goals and conceded 2, their GD is +3. Higher GD ranks a team above another team with equal points.
Can I use this for World Cup 2022 Qatar groups?
▾
Yes! The points system is the same — Win = 3 pts, Draw = 1 pt, Loss = 0 pts. The only difference in 2022 was 32 teams in 8 groups (A–H). You can enter any 4 team names and 6 match results and the calculator works perfectly for the 2022 Qatar format as well.
