Inflation Calculator

Two modes: real historical US CPI data for past values, and a custom-rate mode for future projections.

Historical mode uses published US BLS CPI-U annual average index values for the listed benchmark years. Custom Rate mode is a projection using a rate you supply — it is not a forecast.

What Is an Inflation Calculator?

An Inflation Calculator is a financial tool that shows how the value of money changes over time. This one works two different ways: Historical CPI mode uses real published US Consumer Price Index data to tell you exactly what an amount was worth in another year, and Custom Rate mode projects a future or past value using a rate you choose — since nobody, including this calculator, actually knows next year's inflation rate in advance.

The Real US CPI-U Index, 1980–2025

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is the standard measure of US inflation. Historical mode uses these actual published annual average values:

Line chart of the US CPI-U index from 82.4 in 1980 to 322.8 in 2025

Worked Examples (Real Data)

$100 from 1990, in 2024 dollars:

$100 in 1990 with CPI 130.7 equals $240.01 in 2024 with CPI 313.7
$100 × (313.7 ÷ 130.7) = $240.01.

$100 from 1980, in 2025 dollars:

$100 in 1980 with CPI 82.4 equals $391.70 in 2025 with CPI 322.8
Prices have roughly quadrupled since 1980.

The Other Direction: Purchasing Power Erosion

You can also flip the question: what is a fixed amount of 2000-era buying power worth today?

$100 of buying power in 2000 is worth only $54.90 of buying power in 2024
$100 × (172.2 ÷ 313.7) = $54.90 — roughly half its 2000 buying power.

Recent US Inflation, Year by Year

The 2021–2022 spike was the sharpest in four decades before cooling through 2023–2025:

Annual US inflation rate: 1.23 percent 2020, 4.70 percent 2021, 8.00 percent 2022, 4.12 percent 2023, 2.95 percent 2024, 2.89 percent 2025
Calculated from year-over-year CPI-U annual averages.

Why Two Modes?

Historical CPI mode uses real BLS data for past years; Custom Rate mode projects forward or backward using a chosen rate
Real data for the past, an honest projection for the future — never the reverse.

How Custom Rate Mode Works

The formula used is:

Future Value = Present Value × (1 + Inflation Rate)Years

For example, $1,000 with an assumed 5% inflation rate over 10 years has the purchasing power equivalent of about $613.91 today. You can also reverse the calculation to find the past value of today's money using the same formula.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Choose Historical CPI for real past-year conversions, or Custom Rate for future/past projections.
  2. Historical: enter an amount and pick your From/To years.
  3. Custom: enter an amount, an assumed rate, a number of years, compounding, and direction.
  4. Click Calculate to see the result and chart.
  5. Use Clear to reset the calculator.
Historical mode uses real BLS CPI-U data for the benchmark years listed in the dropdowns — it doesn't interpolate every single year since 1913. Custom Rate mode is a projection based on a rate you supply, not a forecast; nobody can know future inflation with certainty. Neither mode accounts for regional price differences, individual spending patterns, or non-CPI cost categories.

Real-Life Uses of an Inflation Calculator

  • Retirement Planning – Estimate how much money you'll need in the future using Custom Rate mode.
  • Historical Comparisons – Use Historical CPI mode to compare a salary, price, or cost across decades using real data.
  • Business Forecasting – Plan product pricing and salaries adjusted for inflation.
  • Education & Research – Study the real impact of specific historical inflation periods, like 2021–2022.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Inflation Calculator?

An Inflation Calculator is an online tool that shows how the value of money changes over time. This one offers two modes: real historical US CPI data for converting between past years, and a custom-rate mode for projecting future or past value.

How does Historical CPI mode work?

Select an amount and two benchmark years. The calculator multiplies your amount by the ratio of the published US CPI-U annual average index for those two years, giving you a real, data-based conversion rather than an estimate.

Why is there a separate Custom Rate mode?

Future inflation hasn't happened yet, so there's no real CPI data for it. Custom Rate mode lets you project forward (or backward) using a rate you choose, useful for retirement or budget planning.

What CPI data does this calculator use?

US CPI-U (Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers) annual average index values published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, for benchmark years from 1980 through 2025.

Is the Inflation Calculator free to use?

Yes, it's completely free to use. You can run unlimited calculations without registration or hidden charges.

Can I use the Inflation Calculator on mobile devices?

Yes, it's fully mobile-friendly and works smoothly on smartphones, tablets, and desktops.

Final Thoughts

Inflation has a major effect on money's value. By using this Inflation Calculator, you can look up exactly what past amounts were really worth using real government data, or project future scenarios honestly using a rate you set yourself — instead of one number pretending to do both jobs.
